What is a Proverbs 31 Woman?

First, have you heard of the Proverbs 31 wife, mother, woman?!?! For years that passage truly bothered me because I saw it as something IMPOSSIBLE to live up to at face value. She is SUPER WOMAN!!! My husband has not provided me with maidservants to help me with all my tasks.

But a while back I was challenged by the Lord to look at that passage SPIRITUALLY. Wow, what a different take I got from it as I looked up what all these words symbolize. This is attainable and should be my goal to be such a woman, as well as raise my daughters to be such a woman. My sons should seek a Proverbs 31 woman too. But do notice I say this woman is so wise that she has a PLAN to gain a cultivated a land and marry it, she is inspecting and selecting a husband carefully...one that will produce GOOD fruit. So after I share my take on this...I will again share on what a woman should be looking for in a husband in my paraphrase as well.

Excellent could be translated strong and able…so the writer is asking who can find a strong and capable wife?

The heart of her husband trusts in her…his mind, emotions, heart, all confide and trust in her, he takes confidence and security in her. If he has no lack of gain…it seems because of his trust in her…she manages the household well. She does not squander.

She deals fully with him in a pleasant and agreeable manner, she values and esteems him, she has good understanding of him. She is becoming and kind to him. She is not disagreeable, unpleasant, or displeasing to him. She does not compare him to others. She does not have bad thoughts or unkind words about him as long as she lives (remember she was wise and chose a man who bears GOOD fruit as we will soon see).

She seeks with care (this word almost always refers to deity…so her relationship with God is actually being discussed here) wool (whiteness…purity, but also can represent works) and flax is usually representative of Grace. She takes pleasure in the works she does in His name.

She considers and sets a plan to gain a cultivated land and marries it. From her offspring she plants and establishes a vineyard. A vineyard was originally to symbolize the house/nation of faith.

She makes herself material, physical, political, personal, and social strengths…contacts, relationships. In this she has courage in the forces she has access to.

She perceives that her gain from those she comes in contact with is pleasant and agreeable. Her lamp is not extinguished in the night. (Her offspring are not quenched in the midst of darkness…they have spiritual strength through her upbringing).

In the same way one might grab hold of a spinning wheel to produce thread…she grabs hold of the needy to meet their needs.

She does not fear, for all her household are covered in the Blood of Christ.

She has fashioned for herself a covering of bleached linen and royalty. She is a bride of the King of Kings…she is wearing white. She has worked with this end in sight.

She dies to self to give white garments to others, and gives them the girdings for their loins (Truth AKA His Word).

She watches closely over her household spiritually and does not become idle in discipling them.

Her children fulfill her leading and advance thus making her happy

Her husband shines a praise upon her that while many godly women have shown strength, she has ascended above them all.

Charm and favor are not real and beauty is just a vapor here today and gone tomorrow. But a wife and woman who reveres Yahweh, she will find He shines upon her, the greatest blessing.

Bestow upon her the offspring of her strength, and let her end product, the achievement, be the praise she receives in heaven!

This really shows to keep the end in mind in all we do with our children everyday.
