Luis
“Many guerrillas are Christian children who have been brainwashed,”
said Luis, a Christian in Colombia. Luis was kidnapped and forced to
become a guerrilla. Guerrillas carry out illegal acts of war and
terrorism.
Many of the guerrillas in Colombia are part of a group called “las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia” (FARC), which in English means Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. They are not part of a regular army.
Luis told workers from The Voice of the Martyrs about the jungle training camp where the guerrillas took him. “They have a strict schedule. We had to get up at 4:00 a.m. and do exercises. Breakfast was chocolate water, and lunch was watery soup. They repeated to us over and over, ‘God does not exist.’”
Escape
Luis was able to safely escape from the guerrilla training camp. Others
in his camp were shot when they tried to leave.
Luis was also able to resist the guerrillas’ brainwashing and hold on to his faith in Christ. He and another Christian read a hidden Bible when the guerrillas weren’t watching.
An Impossible Commandment?
Jesus commanded His followers, “Go into all the world and preach the
Good News to all creation” (Mark 16:15). FARC guerrillas are part of
God’s creation. But is it possible to share the Good News with
guerrilla terrorists in Colombia?
• FARC guerrillas are Marxist communists. Marxists teach there is no God.
• The guerrillas dislike Bible-believing Christians because Christians do not approve of their evil ways. Guerrillas attack and threaten pastors, and they force churches to close.
• Even if some guerrillas wanted to learn about Jesus, it would be hard to reach them. Their camps are often hidden in jungles where cars cannot go. In the past missionary planes flew over the jungles, but the guerrillas shot them down and kidnapped the pilots.
“Nothing is Impossible with God” (Luke
1:37)
God is helping courageous Colombian Christians find ways to reach the
guerrillas for Christ.
“In most of these areas, a boat is the only way,” said a brave pastor who works in a region controlled by guerrillas. The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) is providing special boats to Christian workers who travel by river to remote areas of Colombia. A worker can carry one of the boats and strap the motor to his back on the way to the river.
A Christian pilot plans to fly over remote regions of Colombia. “It is the only missionary airplane I know in the last 10 years to operate in Colombia,” he said. The pilot knows what the guerrillas did to planes and pilots in the past. He is trusting in God.
The plane will drop unmanned parachutes into guerrilla camps. The parachutes will carry special packages containing radios tuned to a Christian station. They will also include a New Testament and another Christian book written in Spanish, the language of Colombia. Christians are exploring ways to print New Testaments with camouflage covers and waterproof pages that will not be ruined in the humid jungle.
God opens doors to touch even the hard-to-reach.
Pray the Bibles, books, and radios dropped into guerrilla camps will encourage other kidnapped Christians like Luis to stand firm in their faith. Pray guerrillas will give up evil ways and follow Christ. Praise God for making the impossible possible!
